Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes for heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes, is inflamed.
The latest research is showing that Plantar Fasciitis consists of small micro tears and thickening in the plantar fascia, the band of soft tissue that makes up the arch of the foot, and is most commonly caused by your feet being overloaded. The cause for plantar fasciitis isn’t clear, but there are some factors that might increase your risk of developing it such as age, certain types of exercise, foot mechanics as collapsed arches, flat and high arched feet, occupations that keep you on your feet, and wearing shoes with inadequate support.
Normally, the plantar fascia band acts as a shock absorbent and provides support to your arch. Tension and stress on your plantar fascia band can cause it to tear and become irritated or inflamed.
Plantar Fasciitis commonly causes a stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel, that usually occurs with your first step in the morning. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting. When exercising, the pain is usually worse after exercise, not during it.
Ignoring plantar fasciitis may result in chronic heel, knee, hip or back pain. It might changes the way you walk or hinders your regular activities.
